From 2023, European asset managers are obliged to attach a standardised SFDR Annex (Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation) to their mandates and funds in order to avoid greenwashing. With this annex, asset managers disclose the sustainability features of their offered investment strategies on an annual basis. On 08 November 2022, the “Trends in Client Reporting” took place for the 17th time – this year with top-class presentations from various institutions on the topic of “Investment Reporting and Climate”.

A recent survey undertaken by PwC Switzerland and bmpi indicates that investors have a need for standardization and regulation of ESG investing reporting. However, institutional investors wish for a more flexible reporting, which allows for tailoring the report to the needs of the investor. At the “Trends in Client Reporting” on 08 November 2018, experts discussed various topics. Prof. Dr. Kerstin Windhövel spoke about risk management and reporting at pension funds, Leif Ludwig presented the further development of client reporting at UBS with a focus on sustainable investments and Yvonne Suter explained the integration of sustainability as a fixed component of client reporting at Credit Suisse.

On 09 November 2017, the Trends in Client Reporting event offered insights from leading experts. Christian Binz from Zürcher Kantonalbank spoke about the new investment world and the associated reporting. Stefan Illmer from Illmer Investment Performance Consulting AG explained best practices in investment reporting from the perspective of an asset manager and Peter Horner, Head of Operations & Compliance at PUBLICA, shed light on the reporting challenges of a large pension fund.

The white paper explains how these approaches can be integrated into investment reporting and provides insight into how to improve the core statements of investment reporting.

This white paper is designed to help product managers and business analysts redesign investment reports. It highlights the importance of clearly defining goals and statements and shows how existing reports can be optimised through targeted structuring and selection. The document is divided into three parts: the objects, the statements and the tools, and offers concrete steps to improve investment reports.

Investment reporting by Swiss pension funds has already reached a high level. However, a recent benchmark study raises the question of whether the existing reports meet the requirements. The study, which is based on the principles of the CFA Institute, not only examines the prerequisites for effective investment reporting, but also whether the reports provide decision-oriented information and thus enable targeted management of the investment process.

Investment reporting faces a particular challenge with structured products (Struki), as these often have complex constructions and non-transparent costs. The Principles of Investment Reporting were developed and published by the CFA Institute in 2014. They facilitate the dialogue between the creator and the consumer of the reporting.

This white paper aims to describe the basic essence of a reporting system in the form of an essential model. The model serves to clarify the central aspects of such systems and shows only elements that exist due to business motivations, regardless of technological or organisational circumstances. The essential model focuses on the question of “what” rather than “how”.

These guidelines are based on the Principles for Investment Reporting and formulate recommendations for effective investment reporting.

At our last “Trends in Client Reporting 2016” we had the pleasure of welcoming three renowned speakers. Mary Cait McCarthy, Head of Investment Reporting at Credit Suisse, spoke about how providers are responding to the new needs of professional investors. Beat Zaugg, an independent investment consultant, focused on sustainable investments and other advisory areas. Oliver Gloor, Managing Director of bmpi AG and member of the Board of Trustees of the Swisscanto Collective Foundation, explained which questions an investment report must answer.

In a review of the 2015 Trends in Client Reporting, top-class speakers provided their expertise. Peter Mathis from Santro Invest AG, Stefan J. Illmer from GIPS Expert Group and Pedro Fischer from Sulzer Vorsorgeeinrichtung highlighted topics such as investments, industry standards and successful client communication.

At our Trends in Client Reporting 2014, Jürg Werfeli, Christian Heiniger and Tashi Gumbatshang presented their findings. They highlighted the impact of FIDLEG and MiFID II on investment reporting, modern management tools for pension funds and the measurement of client value in investment advice.

At Trends 2013, experienced experts presented their insights. Michal Pruski from Comarch spoke about the adaptation of financial institutions to changing customer behaviour. Dr Darius Zumstein, web analytics expert, highlighted modern approaches to customer insight and Emanuel Bächtiger, Namics AG, presented the 360° Performance Dashboard from Siemens Building Technologies.

At Trends 2012, experts shared their insights. Urs Ludwig from UBS and Peter Zollinger from Globalance Bank shed light on the environmental and social footprint of financial investments. In addition, Urs Arnold from Arnold Design showed how numbers tell stories.

At Trends 2011, experts provided insights into various topics. Tilmann Spohr from Xvisory shed light on client reporting in the advisory process. Dr Stefan Zeisberger spoke about behavioural reporting from behavioural economics and Dr Stefan Illmer presented best practices in investment reporting.

At Trends 2019, experts discussed the impact of the financial crisis. Dominik Kälin from Credit Suisse spoke about reporting in the context of the financial crisis and regulation, Ashish Arondekar from Credit Suisse about the implementation of a new platform, and Christian Binz from Zürcher Kantonalbank presented insights from the “ZKB Anlagereport”. Erwin Heri, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Valartis Group and Professor of Financial Theory at the University of Basel, reviewed the financial crisis, risk management, corporate governance and the crisis of the corporate contract.

At Trends in Client Reporting 2009, experts looked at client reporting from different angles. Peter Salzgeber from UBS spoke about reorganisation and product management. Christian Röthlin from Ernst & Young explained the regulatory influences, while Dr Hans-Joachim Jaeger addressed tax aspects. Dr Stefan Illmer from Credit Suisse looked at client reporting from the client’s point of view.

At Trends in Client Reporting 2008, experts from various financial institutions discussed client-centric content and forms in client reporting. Roger Dicech from Infidar spoke about the introduction of new types of securities in client reporting at Bank Julius Baer. Tashi Gumbatshang and Florian Berger from Zürcher Kantonalbank shed light on investment mapping as a basis for the advisory process. Rolf Burgermeister from Wegelin & Co Privatbankiers spoke about transparent reporting of structured products, while Urs Arnold spoke about the content and form of client reporting.

Trends in Client Reporting 2007 brought together experts from different financial sectors. Dimitri Senik from PricewaterhouseCoopers discussed the differences between customised and standard reporting. Stefan Lenz from Zürcher Kantonalbank spoke about the future-proof software architecture for customer reporting in a universal bank.
