This white paper aims to describe the basic essence of a reporting system in the form of an essential model. The model serves to clarify the central aspects of such systems and shows only elements that exist due to business motivations, regardless of technological or organisational circumstances. The essential model focuses on the question of “what” rather than “how”.

The aim of this white paper is to describe the essence of a reporting system in terms of an essential model. A model is to be understood as a simplified image of an original – in our case a reporting system and its environment – with the purpose of clearly elaborating the core aspects of such systems. The model becomes essential when it shows only those elements that exist because of a “business reason” and not because of technological or organisational circumstances. An essential model answers the question of “what” and not “how”.
